Cookie Tray and Magnetic Letters Match Activity

For his second birthday, my little boy was gifted a box of colourful magnetic letters. I had not yet taught him the alphabet and neither was I in a hurry to do so! He was only a baby and I wanted him to be ready and interested in learning the letters.

He has always had a keen interest in puzzles and so around when he was 18 months, I had got him a chunky board ABC puzzle. He loved it. The colours on the individual puzzle pieces and their respective cavity on the board matched and so he basically enjoyed 'matching' the puzzle pieces into their slots without really knowing his ABCs. He has been playing with this puzzle for over 6 months now and is able to solve it all at ease.

On hindsight I feel this chunky puzzle has sparked his interest in ABC and as of today, at 26 months, letters are his latest passion. He tries to read letters everywhere! The three blades of a fan is 'Y', the handle of my tea cup is 'C'...! It is adorable to see his inquisitive eyes spark up in delight when he able to correctly identify a letter :)

So just over a months after he turned two, I felt he was eager to learn to identify letters and so to pursue his interest in letters identification, I have been setting up a few games for him. This Cookie Tray and Magnetic Letters Match activity is one of the first ones I had set up for him when he was 25 months old. It is super simple and can be put together in 5 minutes!

Things Needed
Cookies Tray - big enough to accommodate all the letters.
Magnetic Letters
White Sheet of Paper - the size of the cookies tray.
Pen

Procedure
  • Place all the letters on the white sheet of paper in order from A-Z. This is to get an idea of how best they fit on the paper. Keep aside the magnetic letters once done.
  • Now, write A-Z on the white sheet of paper in the order in which you had placed the magnetic letters earlier.
  • Place the white sheet of paper on the cookie tray and place the magnetic letters in a smaller tray.
  • Offer it to your little one and demonstrate a couple of times on how to match the magnetic letters with the written letters.
